ROSSINI, Luigi (1790-1857). I sette colli di Roma antica e moderna . Rome: 1828-1829.
ROSSINI, Luigi (1790-1857). I sette colli di Roma antica e moderna . Rome: 1828-1829. Large 2° (716 x 500mm). Double-page title with engraved vignette, folding text leaf. Double-page engraved additional title, double-page plan of Rome, 24 engraved double-page plans and views, one very large folding engraved panorama of Rome on four joined sheets, extending to 3370mm. (Dampstain to lower margin and into images throughout, light spotting and browning, mainly confined to margins.) Contemporary half russia (spine splitting and defective, heavily rubbed). VERY RARE SUITE OF PLATES WITH A SUPERB PANORAMA OF ROME . Rossini was the last great exponent of the vedute , following in the footsteps of Canaletto, Panini and Piranesi. Although too young to have known Piranesi, Rossini had a bust made of the great artist and considered him 'one of the glories of Italy'. Born at Ravenna, Rossini trained at Bologna with, among others, Luigi Cini He then proceeded to Rome, where he came under the patronage of Canova, executing designs for a church at Possagno built by Canova. Rossini also began publishing etched and engraved plates of views of Rome. Like the master he so admired, Rossini combined technical accuracy with artistic vision, thereby reproducing the classical beauty of Rome which was, by Rossini's day, fast disappearing. SINCE 1975, ONLY 4 COPIES OF THIS WORK HAVE APPEARED AT AUCTION (including the Feltrinelli copy in the set sold in these rooms, 3 December 1997, lot 349, recorded by neither ABPC nor AE-online). Brunet IV, 1408.
