Oblong 4° (360 x 285mm). 48 soft-ground etched plates by William Daniell after Samuel Daniell With half-title. (Slight browning of plate edges, and occasional spots and stains, most marginal, a few creasemarks, one plate disbound, without the dedication to Prince Leopold.) Modern green half morocco and marbled boards. Provenance : Fanny Phelps, inscription on half-title dated April, 1876. A 'MOST BEAUTIFUL AND SENSITIVE WORK' (Abbey). 'Mr. Samuel Daniell .. went to the Cape of Good Hope, from where he accompanied Dr. Somerville on two expeditions into the interior of the country .... He was indefatigable in the pursuit of the various subjects he has delineated; and it was his constant care to see the animals alive, that he might make himself the master of their actions and habits' (preface).
