Samuel Pepys--King James II Document signed at the foot, also signed at the head by King James II, to the Commissioners of the Navy Sir John Tippetts, Sir Richard Haddock, and James Sotherne, Commissioners of the Navy, ordering the examination of 'The Originall Bookes and Papers remaineing with you' and answers to three questions concerning the salaries of Pepys and his successors as Clerk of the Acts of the Navy, 2 pages, folio, Whitehall, 6 January 1687, slightly worn at corners, tear professionally repaired, small fold tears repaired with gummed paper The King here requests figures on the annual salaries of Pepys and the joint holders who succeeded him as Clerk of the Acts, also Pepys's subsequent remuneration as Secretary of the Admiralty and Commissioner, and the salary of Sir William Coventry in his capacity as Secretary to James when he was Duke of York and Lord High Admiral. Pepys had returned to the Admiralty in 1684, following his rehabilitation after the Popish Plot. The Commission of the Navy had been set up in 1686, largely at Pepys's initiative, to bring about reforms and investigate the practices of those officials who had been in place during his absence.
