San Francisco From California Street Hill, 1877 - panorama Author: Muybridge, Eadweard Place: San Francisco Publisher: Jean-Antony Du Lac Date: [Negative 1877/ printed 1973] Description: 13-panel panorama, silver photographic reprinting of the original mammoth plate panorama. Each panel 47.3x37.5 cm (18½x14¾"); mounted on board: 62.8x37.5 (24¾x14¾"). No.16 of 50 copies. Excellent reproduction of Eadweard Muybridge's stunning 360 degree panorama of San Francisco in her bustling glory of the late 1870's taken from atop California Street Hill. Visible in striking detail are the mansions of the rich and the dwellings of the poor, the churches, hotels, banks, and other features. One of the most famous photographic endeavors of its kind, a stunning achievement. The original albumen mammoth plate version of Muybridge's panorama is incredibly rare, only five or six examples are known to exist. He also produced a smaller version, with each image about 8 inches high. The present reprinting of the mammoth plate version by photographic lab technician Jean-Antony Du Lac, is superbly executed. It is referred to in Robert Bartlett Haas's "Muybridge: Man in Motion" as a "superb full-size 'photographic edition' of the 1877 Panorama..." Titled, signed and numbered by Du Lac beneath the image of the first panel. Unlisted in OCLC/WorldCat. Presented with the accordion-fold panorama included in One City/Two Visions by Mark Klett Lot Amendments Condition: A few bumped and/or slightly frayed corners to mounting boards, photographs unaffected; photographs fine, overall near fine.
