Martin Luther King, Jr., met with police tear gas, attack dogs, fire hoses, and the arrest of more than 3,000, mostly teenaged, demonstrators. A subdued purpose of this “Human Rights Day” was to call for an end to racial prejudice in San Francisco, where there had been allegations of de facto segregation in the public schools.
