Title: San Francisco photograph album Author: ** Place: San Francisco Publisher: Date: Mostly 1899-1907 Description: With 83 silver-print and/or gelatin silver-print photographs (2 are hand-colored), plus 2 tintypes, 4 printed photographs from various sources, and one color lithograph postcard of the second San Francisco Cliff House being destroyed by flames in 1907; most are hand-captioned below the photograph. Various sizes, from 1½x2" to 7¾x9½". (Oblong 4to) 9x11½, full calf, front cover lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, hinges reinforced with cloth. San Francisco Bay Area family photograph album from the turn-of-the-century with an assortment of images taken at various residences (one with a horse-drawn carriage in front), neighborhoods, work places, children, locations, etc. Two pages are devoted to Phillip George Smith (1885-1957), Sergeant-Pilot (one of only a few ever to hold such a rank at that time) and was part of the first low-level bombing raid in world history, containing 3 original photos and 3 printed photos including Ten-Mile Ranch in Fort Bragg, a clipped portion of an autograph letter signed “Henrietta” containing 12 lines, Smiths’ horses Hamrah (a noted Arabian Stallion) and Copper (son of Hamrah) print taken from photo by Peter Stackpole of Life magazine circa 1944, a horse-drawn carriage with a group of four, etc. Includes 5 photos and 6 pieces from a damaged house (piece of wood, shingle, wallpaper, etc. with caption “Looking thro from Post St. below Octavia”) taken from the 1906 San Francisco Fire & Earthquake, identified as Geary & O’Farrell, Geary & Octavia; images from Golden Gate Park, including the Zoo inside the Park with bears and tigers; views from a German hospital; Mrs. Conoley’s Family & friends in Santa Clara; road to San Jose; Sycamore Farm in Centreville (including label from C.A. Plummer of Centreville); two photos of the Mills College train station, etc. Names include: Mrs. Whittaker, Lucius E. Greene (Attorney at Law with Garber, Balt & Bishop), “Emma & children,” Mr. & Mrs. John Miller and Mary L. Bennett. The two tintypes with a mounted photographer’s label “Cliff House Gallery, W.C. Billington & Co., Photographers, Cliff House, San Francisco, CA.” Rear inside cover with hand-painted Christmas themed decorations and calendar. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine heavily worn and chipped, edge wear, rubbing; some photos with fading, occasional creases and nicks, other light wear to contents; interior very good; album exterior needs repair.
