Sarolea, one of the trio of Belgian motorcycle makers, started in armaments, extending into bicycles in the 1890s. Their Edwardian motor cycles were sold in England as the ‘Kerry’ and there was always a strong English influence to be seen from the ‘twenties onwards, as in this machine. To this day there is great rivalry as to which is best between the owners of Gillet and Sarolea two-wheelers. Amongst the later bikes from the Herstal factory, the ‘S.6’, a ‘sloper’, single-port 600 with pressure lubrication, hairpin valve-springs and excellent road equipment are still amongst the firm’s most in-demand products. This ‘S.6’, owned by Professor Ehn’s family since 1958, was the family transport, hitched to a sidecar. After the arrival of a car, the ‘S.6’ was sidelined and became an early exhibit in the museum. An older restoration, it retains, importantly, its original bill of sale, logbook and wartime documents - suitably stamped with eagle and swastika - as well as registration papers and technical material. Following full re-commissioning, the Sarolea will enhance any collection.
