Barnard, 1806-1807. 2 volumes, 8 o (216 x 142 mm). 5 engraved plates (3 folding and 2 hand-colored). (Some light spotting to folding plates.) (Lacking final leaf called for by Howes at the end of part 2, small marginal tear on D2 in vol. 2.) Modern tan cloth. "ONE OF THE FUNDAMENTAL EARLY BOOKS ON THE ALEUTIAN ISLANDS AND PARTICULARLY UNALASKA" (Lada-Mocarski) FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Sarychev was deputy to Captain Joseph Billings, the leader of the Russian expedition of 1785 to 1793, sent by Empress Catherine II to explore the Arctic and North Pacific Oceans, during which "Alaska and the Aleutians, especially Unalaska, were first carefully charted" (Hill). Sarychev's account was first published in Russian in 1802 as Puteshestvie Flota Kapitana Sarycheva , of which this edition is a translation, although omitting the vocabularies present in the Russian edition.
