Sassoon, Siegfried AUTOGRAPH MANSCRIPT ON HIS POEM 'IDYLL' fair copy in blue ink, 12 lines with one correction, one page, small quarto (145 x 130mm) cut down from a large leaf, dated February 1918, spotting "...Not from the past you'll come, but from that deep Where beauty murmurs to the soul asleep..." An attractive manuscript of Sassoon's lyrical vision of a dawn meeting to the sound of a thrush's song. The poem was written on 1 February 1918, after Sassoon's release from Craiglockhart and whilst he was in barracks in Limerick waiting to embark for Egypt; this future 'Idyll' stands in unspoken but powerful contrast to the terrible visions of the Western Front that had dominated his recent poetry. The poem was included in his collection Picture Show (1919).
