SCAINO da Salo, Antonio (1524-1612). Trattato del givoco della palla . Venice: Gabriel Giolito de' Ferrari and brothers, 1555. 8° (148 x 92mm). 6 folding woodcuts, woodcut initials, including 2 depicting games, printer's device on title, and a larger version on verso of colophon, without final blank. (Light soiling on title.) 17th-century marbled calf, marbled edges (spine somewhat wormed); modern morocco-backed box and linen chemise. Provenance : Carlo d'Arco (title stamp). FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST PRINTED BOOK ON TENNIS with woodcuts depicting equipment and the lay-out of the court, including the court at the Louvre. Scaino, philosopher at the Court of Ferrara, began his treatise at the instigation of his patron Alfonso d'Este after discussing the awarding of a point played at one of d'Este's six courts. Scaino's Trattato carefully outlines the game's rules, regulations and the courtly manner in which it is to be played. Adams S-547; Brunet V 178; Mortimer, Harvard Italian 465.
