Collation: [1-2 6 3 8 4 6 5-7 4 8-11 6 12 2 13 4 14-16 6 17 2 18-19 6 20-25 4 26-29 6 30 2 31 6 32 4 33-35 6 36 2 37 4 38-61 6 . 325 leaves (of 328, without blanks 55/6 and 61/5,6). 64 lines and head-line, table and parts of text double column. Type: 9:165G (head-lines and headings), 16:110 b (text). Xylographic title (severely trimmed, remargined and repaired), approximately 1809 woodcut illustrations by Wohlgemut, Pleydenwurff and Albrecht Dürer including double-page maps of Europe and the World, some with coats-of-arms with wash colouring. Illuminated initial in blue and red on gold ground on first page with coloured border of floral scrolls heightened with gold on outer and lower margins (trimmed). (A few leaves with inner margins strengthened and mounted on stubs, fos. 61/1,2 joined at hinge, a few marginal tears, some slight soiling.) 19th-century sheep, spine gilt in compartments, marbled edges (rubbed and slightly worn at extremities.) Provenanace : some early marginalia and scoring in different hands; J.J. Howard (19th-century bookplate). FIRST EDITION of the Nuremburg Chronicle, the most extensively illustrated book of the 15th century and a masterpiece of complex design.
