SCHMITT, Florent (1870-1958). Autograph manuscript of Chant élégiaque for violoncello and piano, op.24, entitled 'Chant élégiaque, Violoncelle et piano' on the title page and again above the first page of music, with additional probably publisher's notes in pencil laying out the title page and a further note in pencil stating that the work won the first prize at the Concours du Monde Musical in 1903 and listing the jurors, black ink, 11 pages including title, folio (360 x 270mm.), stitched in later brown leather boards with gilt title. Chant élégiaque was composed between 1899 and 1903, when, as the inscription in the manuscript makes clear, the work won the first prize at the Concours du Monde musical. Schmitt later orchestrated the work in 1911. This version for 'cello and piano was in the process of composition when Schmitt won the Prix de Rome of 1900 with Sémramis and is contemporary with the Piano Quintet which was begun in 1902 and finally completed in 1908. Schmitt studied composition with Massenet and Fauré, whom together with Debussy, he greatly admired. He was also indebted to Strauss and early in his career was influenced by Wagner. His works, however, also presaged neo-classicism and in La tragèdie de Salomé of 1907 his rhythms and scoring look forward to The Rite of Spring .
