School of Lodovico Cardi, called Il Cigoli Penitent Magdalene Oil on canvas 51 x 36 1/2 inches (130 x 92.7 cm) Provenance: (Possibly) Cardinal Maffeo Barberini The portrait painter Jacob Hart Lazarus New York, early 19th century Given to William Edward Tiers in payment of a debt between 1845 and 1855 By descent in Tiers's family to Charles A. Manning, Knoxville, TN (his son-in-law) F. Claude Manning, Chicago, ca. 1900 Edward T. Manning, II, Connecticut, ca. 1952 Thence by inheritance to the present owner, New York The original version of this composition, formerly in the J. Paul Getty Museum, was painted by Cigoli in 1598 for his friend Carlo Guidocci. Thereafter several other versions were made, presumably by the artist's workshop, including one in the Galleria Palatina in Florence, another in a private collection in France, and the present painting. It has been suggested that this version may be the one formerly in the collection of Cardinal Maffeo Barberini in Rome. C
Glue relined. Canvas seam running vertically the length of the painting 8 1/2 inches in from the right margin, with repaired losses along it. Scattered touches of very old restoration elsewhere.
