Beschreibung:

SCHUMANN, Robert (1810-1856). Autograph poem signed, Zweierlei bringen wir Dir. Trostlos, wie das Leben des Künstlers , dated Zum 24sten November 1836 and inscribed at the end Beiliegend Composition von R.Schumann und W.Bennet , black ink, two verses of four lines, 1 page, quarto, 271 x 205mm., [Leipzig], Circa 24 November 1836. This poem was apparently written by Schumann and Bennett for the birthday of their friend Henriette Voigt on 24 November 1836. Henriette was the wife of Carl Voigt, a wealthy patron of the arts in Leipzig, whose house was always open to musicians. Schumann was captivated by Henriette and called her his 'Elenore' and his 'A flat spirit.' Sadly Henriette died of consumption in 1838 at the age of 29. It is also a reminder of the regard in which Schumann, and also Mendelssohn, held the British composer William Sterndale Bennett (1816-1875). In the 1836 New Year number of the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik Schumann wrote that were there many artists like Sterndale Bennett all fear for the future progress of our art would be silenced. Bennett was in Leipzig from the end of October 1836 to July 1837, performing and conducting his own works at the Gewandhaus concerts. It was during this time that he formed his close and warm friendship with Schumann.
