Beschreibung:

Collection of documents from the Schuyler family archive. The Schuylers hailed from New York. The documents are from the 19th century and include: Cornelius Schuyler's diplomas from Union College (regular and Philomathean Society), 1816; appointment as 2nd Lieutenant of a company of Horse Artillery in Albany County, signed by Daniel D. Tompkins as Governor (22 March 1816); appointment as Captain of a company of light infantry in the 136 Regiment New York militia, signed by DeWitt Clinton as Governor (10 Jan. 1821); Declaration of Election to the N.Y. Assembly, 14 Nov. 1854; appointment of Schuyler as a fireman; and cdv of Schuyler. Lot also includes seven letters, three of which are from Cornelius to his wife. In one, he notes that his fellow politicians were encouraging him to run for the Assembly again, but he declined. The other writers are somewhat uncertain, although one is signed Harriette (?), possibly Cornelius Schuyler's daughter, dated 1856. The others are dated 1859, 1872, 1886 and 1914 (on mourning-bordered notecard). In addition there are three deeds for land sold to Harriet L. Schuyler dated between 1850 and 1855. Cornelius Cuyler Schuyler was born in Watervliet, NY, 1 July 1795 to Jeremiah Schulyer and Jane Cuyler and died in Albany 31 Jan. 1876. He married Harriet Lane Hillhouse (1798-1857) on 25 October 1817 and the couple had eight children: Harriet Anne, Jane Cuyler, Cornelia Louisa, Thomas Hillhouse, Edward Henry, Jeremiah Cuyler, Caroline Tibbits, and Sarah Hillhouse, five of whom lived to adulthood. The majority of the lot has to do with genealogies of various branches of the Schuyler and Davis families, on dozens of sheets and slips of paper. As early as 1857, a letter was printed on blue legal-sized paper and sent out to family requesting genealogical information. On a larger stage, Schuylers have been in upstate New York since 1700 or earlier. Some of the earliest dates on the genealogy pages go back to about this date. There are postcards from the Schuyler mansion in Albany of Revolutionary War General Philip Schuyler and his wife, Catherine. Philip served in the state Assembly before the Revolution, then in the Continental Congress before receiving his commission in the continental Army. After the war, he returned to the state Senate before becoming one of the first Senators from New York in the US Congress. He bounced back and forth between the state and national senates before retiring for health reasons in 1798. One of Philip's daughters married Alexander Hamilton. Another daughter married Stephen van Rensselaer. Many other family members have served over the years in public positions, and the Schuyler family's influence helped any number of public careers (including Hamilton's). Condition: Variable, as expected. Some separations at folds and toning. Other sheets are in excellent condition.
