[Science, Medicine & Mathematics] MacLaurin, Colin An Account of Sir Isaac Newton's Philosophical Discoveries, In Four Books London: Printed for the Author's Children and sold by A. Millar, and J. Nourse, et al., 1748. First edition, large paper issue. 4to. [8], (i)-xx, (1)-392 pp. Two blank leaves at front and rear. Complete with half and bastard titles, the list of subscribers (the last two leaves bound out of order), and errata. Illustrated with six folding plates. Contemporary brown calf, rebacked in later tan calf stamped in gilt, morocco spine label, occasionally blistered; book-plate of Charles Abbot Esq on front paste-down, and book-plate of the Constitutional Club Library, The Gift of The Right Honble Lord Colchester, 1887 on rear paste-down. ESTC T81914. Colin MacLaurin (1698-1746) was a Scottish mathematician who made important contributions to geometry and algebra. On the recommendation of Sir Isaac Newton he was made a professor of mathematics at the University of Edinburgh in 1725. MacLaurin developed and extended Newton's work on calculus, geometry, and gravitation. His "Treatise on Fluxions" (1742) was the first systematic exposition of Newton's methods.
