SCORESBY, William (1789-1857). An Account of the Arctic Regions; with a History and Description of the Northern Whale-Fishery. Edinburgh: Archibald Constable, 1820. The first edition of this early and influential account of Arctic whaling. "Using vivid and detailed descriptions of equipment and hunting methods, [Scoresby] gave an account of early Arctic whale fishery and, using detailed statistics, described its economics. He reviewed the history of Arctic exploration and made far-sighted suggestions as to how it might be further advanced. The work attracted the notice of scientists throughout Europe, while also gaining a wide readership, including Mrs Gaskell, who used material from it in Sylvia's Lovers (1863)" ( ODNB). Arctic Bib. 15610; Lande 2036; Sabin 78167. Two volumes, octavo (222 x 144mm). Half-titles. Ad leaf at end of vol. 2. 24 engraved plates, including 3 folding maps and 2 folding frontispieces (some spotting, chiefly to ends and plates). Original cloth-backed boards, paper printed spine labels, untrimmed (wear to labels and edges). Provenance: Patrick McGahern Books.
