[London: William Broome], 1584. 4 o (179 x 132 mm). 4 full-page woodcut engravings; woodcut text illustrations (titlepage browned). Full crimson crushed morocco, gilt-ruled, inner gilt-dentelles, gilt spine, gilt edges, by Riviere & Son. Provenance : Seth Sprague Terry (leather book label). FIRST EDITION OF "AN EXHAUSTIVE ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF CONTEMPORARY BELIEFS ABOUT WITCHCRAFT, SPIRITS, ALCHEMY, MAGIC AND LEGERDEMAIN" (DNB). Scot rejected contemporary beliefs in witchcraft as being unsupportable either by reason or by religion. His work stirred a great deal of interest, both supportive and condemnatory. James I, on his accession to the throne of England, ordered that all copies be burnt. STC 21864; Norman 1915.
