Sefer Halachot Gedolot. Venice, 1548. First edition Sefer Halachot Gedolot was written in the time of the Geonim and is one of the first halachic books written after the Talmud was sealed. The identity of its author [called: Bahag = Ba'al Halachot Gedolot] was disputed among the Rishonim who often quote him. Some attribute the work to Rabbi Yehudai Gaon and others to Rabbi Shimon Keira. On the title page of this book the words of the Smag are quoted: "Rabbi Yehudai Gaon wrote Halachot Gedolot", and on the reverse side of the title page a special article is printed about the identity of the author [see further the introduction to the Rosh Troib editions, Warsaw 1875; in the introduction to the edition of Rabbi Ezriel Hildesheimer, Berlin 1888; and in the Bibliography Institute CD Listing 0127157). This is a complete copy of the first printed edition. Ownership inscriptions and corrections in Italian writing. [4], 144 leaves. 29.5 cm. Good condition, stains, small tear to one leaf, few moth marks, professionally restored tears to several leaves. Handsome new binding.
