Monody on Major Andre. Lichfield: J. Jackson 1781. iv, 47, [1] p. 4to (257 x 193 mm). Modern half tan calf over marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt. Some light spotting, else an excellent copy. First edition, signed by Seward on p28. John Andre, a close friend of Seward, was aide-de-camp to General Grey and Sir Henry Clinton during the American Revolution. He was later entrusted with secret negotiations with Benedict Arnold, but was captured by the Americans and hanged as a spy. Seward was known as the “Swan of Lichfield,” and was a friend of many notable figures including Samuel Johnson, James Boswell (for whom she supplied information on the previous figure), Sir Walter Scott and others. Her Monody, which blames General Washington for the tragedy, supposedly brought an apology from him after it appeared. Sabin 79477.
