SHACKLETON, Sir Ernest Henry (1874-1922). The Heart of the Antarctic. London: Ballantyne & Co. Ltd. for William Heinemann, 1909. 3 volumes (including supplement The Antarctic Book Winter Quarters ), 4° (268 x 220mm). Plates, some mounted and coloured, some etched, illustrations, one folding panorama and 2 folding maps only (of 3) in pocket at rear of vol.II. (One map torn, the panorama holed, occasional light mainly marginal spotting.) Original vellum (vols.I & II) and vellum-backed boards (supplement), t.e.g. (lightly spotted and soiled, joints of vol.I slightly split, tear to pocket at rear of vol.II). Provenance : Charles Thomas Spedding (PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION FROM SHACKLETON, dated 1921.) LIMITED EDITION, number 103 of 300 copies, the supplement SIGNED BY EACH MEMBER OF THE SHORE PARTY. Vol.I additionally inscribed "To C. T. Spedding with ever kind thoughts from E. H. Shackleton March 1921." Spedding was a shipmate of Shackleton's before the 1914-18 war, and he contributed to his exploration funds. Spedding worked for the Cunard Line (he was Commodore Purser on the Aquitania for a while) and rose to Commander in the Royal Navy during the 1914-18 war. (3)
