Beschreibung:

Shaker Tilter Chair, New Lebanon, New York, c. 1840, with three arched slats, old finish, ht. 38, seat ht. 14 in. A classic New Lebanon, New York, community side chair. This example has the ring turning between the top of the rear post and finial (called "pommels" by the Shakers) particular to New Lebanon chairs of this period. The steam-bent slats are carefully mortised into the posts, and the top slat is through pinned. This chair retains its original wooden ball-and-socket tilters, a Shaker innovation that was eventually patented in a metal form by Brother George O. Donnell in 1852. These tilters allowed the user to lean backwards without splitting the rear posts or denting the floor.
