SHARPE, Richard Bowdler (1847-1909) and Claude Wilmott Wyatt. A Monograph of the Hirundinidae or Family of Swallows . London: printed for the authors [by Taylor and Francis], 1885-1894. 2 volumes, 4 (305 x 235mm). 103 hand-coloured lithographic plates after Wyatt, printed by Mintern Brothers, 26 maps with areas of distribution hand-coloured, 15 double-page letterpress charts showing distribution. (Titles slightly browned and spotted, title to vol. I with short tear at outer margin, contents leaf to vol. II with similar short tear, occasional light soiling to plates and text.) Modern crimson half morocco, spine lettered in gilt. A fine monograph, issued in 20 parts, of all the known species of swallows. The illustrations by Wyatt often have a topographical link with the swallow's country of origin. P. Tate, in A Century of Bird Books (p. 20), rightly says that they have 'a rather charming soft quality, and are very pleasing in that they depict in many cases a little scene connected with the area in which the species of swallow occurs.' Fine Bird Books p. 107 (wrongly calling for 104 plates); Nissen IVB 868; Wood p. 565; Zimmer p. 578. (2)
