SHAW, GEORGE BERNARD. Proofs, corrected and annotated by Shaw, of six illustrations for Archibald Henderson's authorized biography, George Bernard Shaw: Playboy and Prophet , (London and New York, 1932). Together 5 pages, 18mo-8vo, two of the illustrations on one sheet, the proofs laid down on larger white sheets, corrected and annotated by Shaw -- a total of about 183 words in his hand -- in red, blue and black ink, mostly below the images. The proofs are of illustrations captioned: "Sir Oracle Shaw" (p. xxviii in the book), "T.P. O'Connor" and "Annie Besant" (both opposite p. 104), "A Stained Glass Window" (opposite p. 202), Art Worker's Guild device (uncaptioned, p. 283), and "The Smiling Philosopher" (rejected by Shaw and not used). On the T.P. O'Connor proof Shaw has corrected the caption and has added below: "He survived to be the Father of the House of Commons, and was described by his most famous contributor [Shaw himself?] as having lived and died in the year 1865." Below the image of the Art Worker's Guild Shaw writes: "The Art Worker's Guild refused to accept me as a member in the old days when I joined a few of their continental excursions. They would not admit that literature was an art...Many many many years later they spontaneously elected me as an honorary member." Beneath "The Smiling Philosopher" Shaw remarks: "...It is not a smiling philosopher; and it is an impudent copy of a well known photograph [after a drawing by Branam Bulkin]. The photographer might proceed for infringement of copyright." Provenance : Archibald Henderson (sale, AAA/Anderson, 16 January 1933, lots 201 & 203). (5)
