SHELLEY, Percy Bysshe (1792-1822). Laon and Cythna; or, The Revolution of the Golden City: A Vision of the Nineteenth Century. In the Stanza of Spenser. London: for Sherwood, Neely & Jones and C. & J. Ollier, 1818.
SHELLEY, Percy Bysshe (1792-1822). Laon and Cythna; or, The Revolution of the Golden City: A Vision of the Nineteenth Century. In the Stanza of Spenser. London: for Sherwood, Neely & Jones and C. & J. Ollier, 1818. 8° (220 x 140mm). With the blank leaf after the title, and with errata leaf tipped to the final blank, the paper waterkmarked 'RC 1816'. (Some dampstaining and spotting.) Original drab boards, printed spine label, custom-made grey leather slipcase (faint dampstain on spine panel overlapping onto sides, fore-edges bumped, light wear at the extremities, printed paper label '564' paste to spine head). Provenance : A.H. Bright (bookplate). FIRST EDITION, IN THE ORIGINAL BOARDS. The second issue without the fly-title [leaf d1] only found in a very small number of copies which had been sent to Shelley for presentation. This second issue is itself quite rare: shortly before publication Ollier suppressed the edition, fearing a backlash to the religious, sexual and political content of the poem. Shelley reluctantly changed the offending passages, including the incestuous relationship of the title characters. Laon and Cythna was eventually issued, with twenty-six cancel leaves, under the new title The Revolt of Islam . Granniss 39-41; Hayward 227; Tinker 1894; Wise pp.48-9.
