Shemot Gittin and Formulae for Writing Letters

Beschreibung:

The first treatise is Shemot Gittin, a list of names used in bills of divorce (gittin), written in Hebrew and Italian. It includes the names of men and women as well as place names. The manuscript was found in the office of the scribe of the Jewish community of Modena. The names are recorded according to the local custom instituted by Rabbi Ishmael ben Abraham Isaac ha-Kohen of Moden (MaHaRIKh). This manuscript is an interesting source of information about the names of Italian Jews.
The second contains elegant formulae for addressing the recipients of letters. On fol. 1r, Reuven ben Jacob is referred to as rav u-maran, with the blessing for the living, and a poem with the acrostic Reuven. Fol. 14r contains instructions for making a mirror and fol. 14v offers prescriptions for wounds and boils.

Vol. 2: 24 leaves on paper, 7 ½ x 6 ¼ inches; 191 x 159 mm, written in brown ink in an eighteenth-century Sefardi semi-cursive script, catchwords, modern foliation in pencil; small tears at edges of a few leaves slightly affecting text, first and last leaves dust-soiled, some staining, library stamp on first and last leaves, hinges loose. Morocco spine, marbled boards; a little rubbed.
