Beschreibung:

'Ship leaving harbour' [background moves across image, ship rocks in waves] Maker unknown (11 3/4 x 4 3/8 x 7/8 inches), rack and cam mechanism enclosed in slide body. *Notes- These very complex slides were so expensive to make with the clock-like interior mechanism and hand painted glass layers designed to move over each other smoothly, that few showmen could afford to buy them. They were at least thirty-two times as expensive as a single hand painted slip slide. Some, such as ' The Steamer Crossing from Dover to Calais' , were even more expensive and only made to special order. This slide and lot 365 both incorporate a number of mechanical devices animating the whole scene with ships rocking on moving waves and the clever contra effect of changing background and ships passing each other. The main steamer seems to be pitching and tossing on the rough sea as it journeys from Dover Harbour to Calais. Contemporary audiences were amazed as they viewed the projection on a large screen, pre-dating cinema by a decade.
