This slide and lot 365 both incorporate a number of mechanical devices animating the whole scene with ships rocking on moving waves and the clever contra effect of changing background and ships passing each other. The main steamer seems to be pitching and tossing on the rough sea as it journeys from Dover Harbour to Calais. Contemporary audiences were amazed as they viewed the projection on a large screen, pre-dating cinema by a decade.
