Ship of Fools] - BRANT, Sebastian - Aff-ghebeelde narren speel-schuyt/ verciert met meer als hondert schoone figueren na den aerdt van veelderley sotten die op aerden sijn [trsl. from the Latin A.B.]. Leiden, H. van Haestens, 1610, 4to, cont. blindstamped vellum (soiled), flat spine titled in ink, [8]-109 (= 110)-[4] ff. (dampstaining in last quires, some minor thumbing). Very good copy.
Very rare Leiden ed. of the Dutch version of the famous "Narrenschiff" of the German humanist Seb. Brant (1457-1521), translated by the still unidentified "A.B.". Earlier trsls appeared in Antwerp in 1548 and 1584. Illustrations : nice engr. title (Ship of Fools) , oval portrait of Brant by J.J. Boissard (A4v) , 105 large woodcuts (some full-page). 60 of these come from the Antwerp "tradition", 45 from the "Strasburg" one. Title printed in red and black within double ruled border. Gothic type. Mod. bookpl. John Landwehr . Ref. STCN (i.a. BL = Simoni B-258). De Vries (Ned. embl.) 3. Not in BnF.
