Beschreibung:

Silver gelatin photograph, 8.25 x 6.5 in., mounted to 12 x 9.25 in., presenting Colonel Herbert J. Slocum (left) seated among members of the 7th US Cavalry, including Major Edward Settle Godfrey (center), at Camp Egbert, Pinar del Río, Cuba during the Spanish-American War, July 26, 1899. The men appear in uniform, with many holding swords, and are identified in ink on mount below image: "H[erbert] J. S[locum], Captain Fuller 7 Cav, Captain Waterman 7 Cav, Lt. Ray 7 Cav, Major Godfrey 7 Cav, Lt. Conrad 7 Cav, Lt. Murphy 7 Cav." Inscribed and dated at left: "Camp Egbert, / Pinar del Río, / Cuba. / July 26 '99." Edward Settle Godfrey (1843-1932) was born in Kalida, OH and served briefly as a private in Company D of the 21st Ohio Infantry during the Civil War before securing an appointment to West Point in 1863. He graduated in 1867 and was commissioned second lieutenant in the 7th Cavalry, posted to Company G at Fort Harker, Kansas. Godfrey participated in the Washita Campaign against the Cheyenne and, in the next few years, he received several promotions and became the only officer of the 7th Cavalry to see action at all major Plains Indians engagements. During the Nez Perce Campaign of 1877, he was severely wounded in the initial cavalry charge on the Snake Creek camp defended by Chief Joseph and his band. He was brevetted major for the action in February 1890 and presented with the Medal of Honor as a captain in 1894. Appointed major of the First Cavalry in December 1896, Godfrey rejoined the 7th Cavalry the following year and served with this unit in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. While in Cuba, the 7th Cavalry was visited by Herbert Slocum (1855-1928), a Cincinnati, OH native who had recently reverted to the rank of captain following a brief stint in the Office of the Inspector General. Prior to this post, Slocum had been assigned to the 7th Cavalry and served with them from 1876 until 1898. Condition: Raised white stain in foreground, with light spotting, toning, and surface soil throughout. Mount with wear to edges and corners, staining, and minor surface abrasions. Puncture at upper right near corner.
