Silver Meiji period (1868-1912) Unknown Japan 217g A Japanese export silver and enamel chatelaine, stamped 'jungin' (pure silver) and a workshop mark, the panel chased in semi relief with a three-toed dragon amidst clouds holding a pearl in his claws, hung with five chains suspending a mirror, with a dragon to the front; a scent bottle, with wisteria to both sides; a pencil holder, with flowers; an aide memoir, with one dragon from front to back, signed; and a circular box, with a dragon to the cover, the panel 8.3cm wide, 28cm drop A chatelaine is a decorative belt hook or clasp worn at the waist with a series of chains suspended from it, each mounted with a useful household appendage such as scissors, thimble, watch, key, vinaigrette, household seal, etc. Chatelaines were worn by many women housekeepers in the 19th century, though 18th century examples do exist as do watch only chatelaines. Similar jewellery was also worn by Anglo Saxon women, as seen from the burial record, but its function is uncertain.. £1700
