The first edition, containing a brother's account of the explorer's mysterious death. Thomas Simpson (1808-1840) was second in command of the valuable 1836-39 Hudson's Bay Company expedition to complete the charting of the Northwest Passage. Green; folding map (frontis. spotted, neat reinforcement to folds in map, mild toning, few emphasis marks in text). Original blue cloth, spine gilt-lettered (hinges cracked, light chipping to spine ends). Provenance : High Latitude, Bainbridge Island.
