SIMPSON, George. The Anatomy of the Bones, Joints, and Muscles, exhibiting the parts as they appear on dissection, and more particularly in the living figure; as applicable to the fine arts . London: Published for the author, 1834. 2 parts in one, 4 o (320 x 243 mm). 30 plates (some spotting). Original paper boards (rebacked in cloth, some wear at edges). Provenance : J.H. Hill (signature dated "1874" on title-page); J.P. Hill (signature dated "1892" on front flyleaf); F.V.H. (bookplate). Second edition. Simpson was a surgeon who also taught anatomy to artists. On the title-page of his book he stated that he intended his work for members of the Artist's Anatomical Society. The drawings for the plates, which were finished in the crayon manner, were made by William Henry Brooke (1772-1866) and John Taylor Wedgwood (1782-1856) who also drew for Astley Cooper. Describing the first edition of 1825, Choulant states that "the life-size figures are remarkably beautiful and true to nature, the smaller figures and copies less so"(Choulant-Frank p. 340). The work was published by the author for subscribers, the list of whom includes the portrait painter and master drawing collector, Sir Thomas Lawrence the illustrator George Cruikshank and the surgeon Joseph Constantine Carpue. Lawrence would have subscribed only to the first edition since he died in 1830.
