Pair of surgical scissors, formerly used by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, London, 1875-1900, 160 mm (6.5 inches) in length, two steel blades, hinged with a rivet, fingerholes, imprint of "Geo. Butler & Co. Sheffield" on one blade, marked with small stamped key design, in modern framed box. Provenance: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle; Dame Jean Conan Doyle (1912-1997); gifted to Julian Wolfe (1905-1990), Commissioner of the Baker Street Irregulars in New York; Presented by him to Norman S. Nolan, upon his Medical School graduation. Conan Doyle received his Bachelor of Medicine and Master of Surgery in 1880, and his full M.D. degree in 1885, from the prestigious Edinburgh University. While a student he clerked for the Scottish surgeon and lecturer Joseph Bell, who would inspire Doyle in the creation of Sherlock Holmes.
