SIR JOHN HILL (1716?-1775) Eden: or, a compleat body of gardening . London: printed for T. Osborne, S. Crowder & Co. and H. Woodgate, [1756]-1757. 2° (420 x 258mm). 2pp. letterpress dedication to the Earl of Bute, engraved frontispiece and 60 hand-coloured engraved plates. (Leaf of contents misbound at end, 80mm tear to 5D2 sometime repaired with tape, very short marginal tear to 6U1, variable spotting and browning throughout.) Contemporary diced calf (rebacked) Provenance : Sir Giles Loder (bookplate). COLOURED ISSUE OF ONE OF THE FIRST ' MODERN ' GARDENING BOOKS . The work was designed along very unusual lines, for the period: each weekly part includes information on what should be done in the garden during the following week together with descriptions of the plants that should be at their peak at that time.
