[With:] Civil War letter discussing the causes of the war and slavery, Hillsboro, TN, 26 July 1863. 4pp, 5 x 8 1/4 in. (creased at folds, else good). The writer, a soldier writing from a camp near Hillsboro, TN, opines: "I say distroy [sic] every thing that belongs to the rebs that will help to exterminate this rebellious war and I concider [sic] slavery as one of the mane [sic] obejects [sic] if it had not been for this cursed slavery this war would never have ben [sic] and the sooner it has done the better some of the weak minded northern class of people say that the Negroes will all come up north and the whites will emalgamate [sic] I pity such being that has no more sense than that but I know there is some but never will be in yours or my time the negroes donot [sic] want to go north or but fiew [sic] of at least they can do better here where the climate is more suitable for them some people think that the negroe does not know anything but that is a mistake..." The writer also replies to something the recipient mentioned in an earlier letter regarding mixed-race children, writing: "I saw some here that were as hansome [sic] as any Girl I ever saw it was hard to tell whether she was a negro or not..."
