Washington, D.C.: Buell & Blanchard Printers, [c.1855]. Broadside (245 x 145 mm). Signed in print by Lewis Clephane. Condition: light creases. fighting for abolition: the organization the republican party at its inception. The Republican Association of Washington, created as an anti-slavery group in the wake of the 1854 Kansas-Nebraska act, was often represented as "The Publishing Association of Washington" by its secretary and founding member, Lewis Clephane. While publishing and distributing various manifestos to foster the growth of the new party, the group held its first convention in early 1856 and nominated John C. Fremont as its first presidential candidate. The present document seeks subscribers for this campaign at different rates. The earliest known imprint from the ogranization is the 1854 constitution of the Washington group, found only in the Library of Congress.
