Title: Small archive of books and ephemeral pieces relating to the history of editor Don Allen’s Four Seasons Foundation, San Francisco, CA Author: ** Place: San Francisco Publisher: Four Seasons Foundation/ Don Allen Date: 1960's Description: In 1964 former Grove Press editor Don Allen formed the Four Seasons Foundation to publish works of West Coast writers and artists and additionally to hold poetry readings of their works. This group of materials includes a 6 page photocopied typescript of Allen’s own history of the Foundation narrating it’s formation, the people involved, it’s financial history and a bibliographical check list of the Writing Series and the Wheel Series, initialed by him in pencil. A typescript of the text for the announcement for the 1963 Poetry Folio of broadsides, an announcement of the Writing Series addressed in Allen’s hand to board member Margot Patterson Doss, a stray typescript of The Dusenbery – Mackintosh Stone for Jack Spicer to be erected at Aquatic Park, apparently the beginning poem of Spicer’s Language, published by White Rabbit Press. Possibly a podium copy. A holograph note in pencil written on a manila envelope by board member Doss, explaining the agreement she had with Allen, in part, “Don was to bring me 3 copies of everything Four seasons put out in return for my contribution and to keep me informed of our financial state. Not much to ask, but he soon dropped his end of the load. Small wonder that I should feel I could also drop mine.” Also included, 8 of the Writing Series books, #1 Olson; #2 Dorn/Rumaker/Tallman; #3 12 Poets & 1 Painter; #4 Loewinsohn; #6 Olson, Proprioception; #11 McClure, 313, Olson, Stocking Cap, and #15 Hadley. Provenance: Margot Patterson and John Doss. Lot Amendments Condition: The lot all in fine condition. Item number: 190546
