Philadelphia: J. R. Smith c. 1844. Aquatint, hand-colored (250 x 500 mm). Framed. Condition: short closed tears to right margin. Provenance: Martin P. Snyder. John Rubens Smith executed two views for city hotelier Joseph M. Sanderson. “In commissioning Smith to produce this pair of prints, Sanderson must have intended to convey as part of his message the quality of his hotels … As is the case with so many early prints of Philadelphia, these provide us with a lively picture of the street life as well as physical structure of the city” (Wohl Collection). This print was likely executed shortly after the opening of his Franklin House in 1844 and depicts a bustling Chestnut Street full of foot traffic and carriages. The hotel would be demolished in 1866. rare original issue , with later restrikes known to exist. Snyder, MOA 205; Wohl Collection 153.
