SOUTH SEA BUBBLE -- Het Groote Tafereel der Dwaasheid, vertoonende de opkomst, voortgang en ondergang der Actie, Bubbel en Windnegotie, in Vrankryk, Engeland, en de Nederlanden, gepleegt in den Jaare MDCCXX . [Amsterdam: Dirk Onder de Linden], 1720 [or later]. 2 o (396 x 243mm). Title printed in red and black, folding engraved frontispiece and 76 plates on 70 sheets, 47 folding. (Several short tears and splits in folds, some browning in the text, large tear in folding frontispiece.) Contemporary Dutch mottled calf, gilt spine, 2 roll-borders round sides, large cornerpieces made up of smaller tools, large gilt lozenge at centre (foot of spine worn). Only edition of this extraordinary book representing the origin, progress and downfall of the South Sea Bubble in France, England and Holland. Some of the plates, which include a portrait of John Law, are very obscene. Sabin states that the number of plates in copies varies from sixty to seventy-four. This copy, however, contains seventy-six and the copy in the Kress Library eighty-five. Sabin 28932; Kress 3217.
