SPADE, Valerio (1613-1688). Veduta della città di Firenze dal muricciuolo del prato de' padri di San Francesco al monte . [Florence]: by the author, [mid-17th century]. Etched panoramic view of Florence on two Royal sheets joined, overall 415 x 1205mm. Dedication to the Medici set in a decorative armorial cartouche flanked by angels with ducal crown above and title in scrolled ribbon below, key to the city's principal buildings inset along lower margin. (Trimmed to image, edges of one sheet reinforced on verso.) Valerio Spada who studied painting in Florence with Lorenzo Lippi and became a fine engraver and calligrapher, was appointed as artistic tutor to the young price Cosimo III, later Grand Duke of Tuscany. This ambitious view of Florence, dedicated to His Royal Highness Prince Leopold, depicts the entire city and its walls, from the Belvedere to the old Mint, with the surrounding hills and the town of Fiesole identitfied on the horizon. This panorama is also notable for the buccolic detail shown in the foreground, including figures, animals, vineyards and olive trees.
