German-made M1872 Mounted Artillery pattern retailed by Henry V. Allien &. Co., New York, NY. Curved blade is 31.25" with floral engraving on both sides having brass mounted nickel scabbard bearing a four-line block inscription that reads, Presented to 1st LT. W.J. O'BRIEN by the 2nd Platoon Batt. A. C. V. 1898. Brass hilt with shagreen grip having three strands of twisted wire. This pattern was regulation for artillery until 1902. 1st Lieutenant William J. O'Brien served in Light Battery A, Connecticut Volunteer Artillery organized at Branford and mustered into service May 17, 1898 with 5 officers and 120 enlisted men. The unit remained state-side during the brief war with Spain and mustered out at New Haven on October 25, 1898. Condition: Sword is VG with bright, unmarred blade. Plated scabbard showing bubbled and raised finished with some rust spots on upper two-thirds, not affecting presentation.
