Woodcut initials, initial spaces, a few initials supplied in red. 192 WOODCUT ILLUSTRATIONS (from 177 blocks, 15 repeats). (Some marginal tears repaired, mostly marginal worming occasionally mended, some woodcuts with faint reddish coloring.) Dark brown morocco decorated in blind and gilt, spine gilt lettered, edges gilt, by Riviere. Provenance : Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate) -- donated to SMS 12 December 1946. FIRST EDITION in Latin and German together and first edition of the German text, FIRST TYPOGRAPHICAL EDITION, preceded by four Dutch Prototypographical editions in Latin and Dutch usually described as block-books. An inscription dated 1473 in the Fairfax Murray copy states that the book was "printed as well as written" in the monastery SS. Ulrich and Afra. The Speculum humanae salvationis , is one of the classic religious illustrated works of the late Middle Ages. William Morris describes the woodcuts as being "...thoroughly expressive of the story they tell." They are presumably cut by the "Bämler-Meister."
