FIRST EDITION. Colin Clovts come home again was written after Spenser's return to Kilcolman and commemorates his visit to London in 1589-1591. "A charming account of his travels and court experiences," it describes in allegorical terms how Raleigh visited Spencer in Ireland and then induced him to come to England "his Cynthia to see." Cynthia is Elizabeth and "the Shepheard of the Sea" Raleigh, the dedicatee of the work. Spenser ends with a tribute to the unidentified figure of Rosalind, despite her cruelty to him. Although not announced on the title-page, six elegies on Sir Philip Sidney are also included in the volume. "Astrophel" is by Spenser, but the rest are by three friends, Ludowick Bryskett, Matthew Roydon, and Raleigh. The title device contains the initials of the printer, Thomas Creede. Ashley V, p. 194; Grolier Langland to Prior 236; Johnson Spenser 16; Pforzheimer 967; STC 23077.
