US M1864 pattern musket lock marked with {spread-winged eagle} and US / SPRINGFIELD, dated 1864 at tail. Breech block marked in four-lines: 1870 / {EAGLEHEAD} / {Crossed Arrows} / US. Barrel without any proof marks as is correct. A single script ESA (Erskine S. Allin) cartouche in an oval is present on the counterpane and a boxed script L firing proof is present behind the triggerguard. US M1870 pattern leaf rear sight, graduated to 700 yards, front sight base with inset brass blade. Sling bar inlet into counterpane with 1.07" OD ring (.739" ID), solid buttplate marked US on tang, no holes in stock under buttplate, single barrel band marked with a "U". 41" in overall length, 9" stock comb, 3.5" wrist (comb to counterpane). 2.325" arch in breech block, inspected with an H. No numbers under barrel or receiver, breech plug marked with a "C" and an "S." Only 341 of these scarce early Trapdoor carbines were produced circa April-June of 1871, with a second run of 20 guns produced during the final quarter of 1871. This is a wonderful example of one of the very rare 2nd quarter of 1871 produced carbines. Condition: Fine. Retains much of the period browned finish on the barrel which is thinning and fading. Receiver with some of the period dull blue-black coloring and some muted mottled case color on the breech block and lock. All markings are clear and crisp with a fine cartouche on the counterpane. Mechanically fine, fine bright bore with about 2"-3" of dust and dirt near the muzzle that should clean out easily. Stock about fine with scattered bumps, dings, mars and impact marks from storage and use. Some tiny surface chips are missing forward of the triggerguard, lock and to the rear of the upper sling bar mount, which also shows a pair of tiny surface grain cracks emanating from the rear of the mount. Overall a really stunning example of an incredibly scarce, early production Trapdoor carbine that is missing from nearly every collection of Trapdoors.
