[St. Fortunatus' Monastery in Charlieu France] - paper negative Author: Geoffray, Stephen Place: Charlieu Publisher: Stephen Geoffray Date: 1854 Description: Paper negative of St. Fortunatus' Monastery in Charlieu France. 20.3x14.7 cm (8x5¾") Fascinated by the work of Gustave Le Gray who in 1850 published his method of using dry waxed paper as a photographic negative, Stephen Geoffray began to study and experiment with wax, and especially with one of its components, ceroleine, which has the property of making the paper translucent. This is one of his first test photos. On March 24, 1854, he sent an article on his new method to the journal Cosmos. Gustave Le Gray recognized the value of the method in La Lumiere (article of June 24, 1854). Lot Amendments Condition: Chipping to left edge, some cracks and scratches; about very good.
