Major Pond, who had known Stanley from the mid 1860s, was the organiser of his first American lecture tour in 1886 (interrupted by the Emin Pasha relief expedition) and of a full tour in 1890-91. Stanley's inscriptions commemorate their travels through America: 'Remember our Trans-Continental trip in 1890-91' and 'With best compliments to my compagnon du voyage, Major Pond of Lyceum Fame'. Pond's own annotations remark on the numerous men he also knew or places he had seen for the two men shared a background of travelling in 'Indian country'. STANLEY, H.M.
