Beschreibung:

STONING OF ST STEPHEN, in an initial S from a choirbook, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [Lombardy, c.1455] 153 x 144mm overall. The saint kneels in the lower bow of the initial, stones raining around him while two men in the middle distance, in the upper bow, hurl rocks at him, in the distance behind them pointed peaks topped with turreted buildings, the initial staves of pink with monochrome shading and white decoration and lined with liquid gold, leaves of blue and green curling round the staves all set against a ground of burnished gold (a few creases affecting the gold, spotting of one leaf terminal). Cut to shape and framed. No doubt this initial introduced the Feast of St Stephen in a large format choirbook. The strong, bright and clear colours and the crisp modelling of the leaf forms recall the style of the Master of the Vitae Imperatorum and point to the origin of the initial in Lombardy.
