The episode of the Marriage at Cana only appears in the New Testament in the Gospel of John (2:11). The event is important because it marks the beginning of Jesus’ public life and his first sign, which encouraged some of his first disciples to follow him. Thanks to the marriage context, the scene is also an opportunity for painters to create spectacular compositions in which they can deploy their skills – as in the case of the present fine panel – in the various motifs appropriate to a wedding scene.
Hieronymus Francken, son of Frans Francken the Elder (1542–1616), worked in the same style as his father, but his figures are noticeably rounder and more muscled. In this painting, motifs can be identified that are close to those that appear in dance scenes depicted by the same artist. There are other illustrations of the same subject by his brother, Frans Francken the Younger (1581–1642), especially a composition he revisited several times with variations, whose finest example is in Seville Cathedral.
A painting that seems to derive from this model can be found in the Museum Catharijneconvent, Utrecht (inv. BMH s3698).

L'épisode des Noces de Cana n'est présent dans le Nouveau Testament que dans l'évangile de Jean (2:11). Episode important car il inaugure la vie publique de Jésus, il s'agit également de son premier signe qui pousse certains de ses premiers disciples à le suivre. Cette scène grâce au contexte du mariage est aussi l'occasion pour les peintres de réaliser des compositions spectaculaires dans lesquelles ils peuvent, comme c'est le cas dans ce beau panneau, déployer leur savoir-faire au gré des motifs variés qu'une scène de mariage permet de représenter.
Hieronymus Francken, fils de Frans Francken le Vieux (1542-1616) a travaillé dans le même style que son père, mais ses figures sont nettement plus rondes et musclées. On retrouve dans ce tableau des motifs proches de ceux présents dans les tableaux représentant des scènes de bal du même artiste.On connaît d’autres compositions du même sujet de son frère, Frans Francken le Jeune (1581-1642), notamment une reprise plusieurs fois avec des variantes dont le plus bel exemple est exposé dans la cathédrale de Séville. 
Une composition sembant dériver de ce modèle est conservée au Museum Catharijneconvent à Utrecht (inv. BMH s3698).
