Green velvet-lined mahogany box with key. Brass corner reinforcements and brass oval on top, not engraved. Removable till for two layers. Unlike most surgeon's kits, this one has very few surgical tools, just a couple scissors, tweezers and one ivory-handled knife. It mostly contains vials and ampoules, a glass funnel, etc. and would appear to be a pharmaceutical dispensary. Boxes for laxative and cough drops (empty), one empty box for Wigmore's Patent Caponizing Set. Working on soldiers or roosters? Inside is manuscript biography: S. Clay Brown was born at Brownsville, Maryland Dec. 10, 1832, and moved with his parents to Indiana when a boy. He died at Fitzgerald, Ga. Aug. 4, 1915 aged 83 years. October 2, 1862 he was mustered as assistant Surgeon of the 8th Ind. Reg't. and on June 7, 1864, he was promoted to Surgeon of the 18th Ind. Reg't. in which Regiment he served until the end of the war. [he and his wife moved to GA in 1897]...Comrade Brown had always been active in Grand Army Circles and was a Post Department Commander of the Dept. of Georgia an South Carolina.... Condition: Minor wear, top section in lid loose.
