Renowned Lithuanian photographer Antanas Sutkus was one of the co-founders and a president of the Photography Art Society of Lithuania and recipient of the Lithuanian National Prize. Sutkus' series "People of Lithuania", which the images offered in this lot and the following 5 lots are from, is considered one of his most important works. It is a continuing project begun in 1959 to document the changing life and people of Lithuania. Working at the time when Lithuania was part of the Soviet Union, Sutkus focused on black and white portraits of ordinary people in their everyday life rather than the model citizens and workers promoted by Soviet propaganda. – First print with glue stains and paper loss in lower corners, some creases, retouched spots, each with traces of previous mounting with some paper loss on verso, second print in very good condition.
